Our Work in Action
Case Study 1
An employee who performed vehicle and cargo screening for explosives suffered from a bleeding ulcer after being deployed in Iraq for a year. The ulcer was treated, but due to the potential of a “bleed out” during medical evacuation to the U.S., the employee was advised to stay bedridden for two weeks prior to the evacuation. The DBA Insurance carrier denied benefits indicating the condition was not “occupationally related.” We stepped in and the claim was reviewed by legal counsel, and it was determined that because of the nature of his employment the claim was compensable, and benefits were approved. Had the benefits not been covered by the insurer, the employer would have been responsible for the medical evacuation, estimated at $100,000.
Case Study 2
An employee’s condition was determined by our DBA attorney to be the effect of a genetic disease, rather than an on-the-job incident. By review of the attorney’s coverage opinion, the questionable claim was denied by the DBA carrier. While the outcome of this incident didn’t bode well for the employee, our careful investigation prevented a claim against the insured contractor’s insurance.
